About

Just what is Gulf Games? Read on and you’ll get an idea of what this wonderful gaming get-together is all about.

Gulf Games is a get-together of gaming enthusiasts and their families from around the globe. The gathering is held twice a year — normally in the Deep South — and provides an opportunity for gamers to meet, socialize and, of course, game. The emphasis is placed on fellowship and camaraderie and families are welcome.

The idea of Gulf Games was born when three internet gaming buddies (Ted Cheatham, Ty Douds and Greg Schloesser) decided to extend our internet relationship into a face-to-face and much more personal friendship by meeting with our families for some fun, socializing and gaming. Our first get-together was held in May 1998 on the Emerald Coast of Florida (specifically Navarre Beach). At that time, it was decided to have another get-together in the Fall and expand the invitations to others who would enjoy sharing in the spirit of camaraderie and fellowship, centered around our beloved hobby of gaming.

It was decided that this should be a family affair and offer events and activities for the entire family to enjoy. In addition to the abundance of gaming, there are various other fun-filled events, including a welcome party filled with games and contests; puzzles and quizzes; game tournaments and often a group dinner. Further, many gamers take time out to play games with the kiddies, and time is allotted for “family time” so that attendees can spend time with their family and visit the area attractions and sight-see. Folks treat Gulf Games like a family reunion and vacation, with dozens of folks arriving early — including the week before — to gather together, sight-see and visit the area attractions with their fellow Gulf Gamers.

Of course, there are games … tons of ’em. The emphasis is heavily upon the German and European style games, so this is not the place for the rabid, hard-core wargamer. However, the games run from intense matches of deep strategy games to absurdly silly party games. Laughter and fun are in no short supply at Gulf Games! In short, there was something to appeal to the tastes of nearly everyone.

We have now been meeting twice-a-year since 1998 and are switfly approaching our 25th anniversary. The folks who attend are more than friends — they are considered family. The warmth and love shared by everyone is something which makes an indelible impression upon everyone in attendance. Long-time attendee and friend Michael Weston described Gulf Games thusly: “It is like a family reunion, but where the attendees actually like each other!

We will continue to hold Gulf Games twice a year so that we can all gather and enjoy the wonderful friendship and love that has developed between us. With the incredible enthusiasm expressed by everyone, Gulf Games will continue to grow and has a very bright future.
