Gulf Games 6: Magnus Lundgren

Navarre Beach, Florida
October 12 – 15, 2000

This was my second Gulf Games – I also attended Gulf Games IV in Destin, Florida. That first time Gulf Games for me was a great chance to play games that I had never seen before. This Gulf Games was a lot about meeting people that I had seen before – even if I did get the chance to meet some new people as well.

I will not try to make a list of people I met- I would just forget someone. Instead I would say something about some people who didn’t make it.

Regina whom I was lucky enough to meet anyway since Sheldon lets stay at his home in Atlanta and drove us all the way down to Navarre Beach. I even got the chance to play a game with her, Chronology, but that was after Gulf Games so I couldn’t mark her as “played with”.

Jason Matthews, whom I had been looking forward to meet. If nothing else to squeeze my 30 or so dollars from him that he owned me 😉 Fortunately Vonda made it so I got my money anyway.

and of course…

George, whom I had meet in Destin and also then had a great dinner together with. I remember playing Durch die Wuste and KK&K with George and he always tried to convince me into playing moves that would benefit him as well as me. This time I had pictured myself repeating Derk’s mantra over and over “Kill George”, while crushing George in some game 😉

I did get to play some games as well, strange though it feels like I played fewer games this time around than last time.

Moments that I will remember and treasure from this Gulf Games.

The final of the Liar’s Dice tournament when I had two dice, my opponent three. I had one star and placed a bid on four stars – and sure enough there was four stars there.

Sheldon’s face when he noticed that he and I had almost the same costume at the costume party – but we weren’t the same piece.

Playing Bambuti for the first time – opponent Ralph, who scored twice early in the game. Slowly but steadily I managed to get the symmetries in and it ended with an even score.

Breaking my index fingers in that “point at the pieces game”. They were still hurting even the day after, but anything for a victory right?

The size of the meat that Sheldon had for dinner at Cowboys. If you weren’t there you wouldn’t believe me if I described it so.

And of course the now famous “Holding” – ” UrSUPPE” incident.
